ABOUT

Honey Tripper AKA Lilli is an artist working predominantly with ballpoint pen on paper, based on Gunai/Kurnai land in South Gippsland. Having spent 9 years in blackwork tattooing, Honey’s recent work on paper is similarly meticulous and keeps within the monochrome realm. Her interest in ballpoint pen drawing developed through Naarm/Melbourne’s lockdowns from 2020 onwards, when tattooing was one of the first industries to temporarily shut down. Her desire to work on paper grew, and this partially inspired the move back to South Gippsland in 2022. Honey’s work explores native botanical and ornithological elements, with most recent pieces specific to Gunai/Kurnai land and the landscapes of South Gippsland. Her deep appreciation for flora and fauna is a theme that has carried across from her tattoo work, and has been amplified by living rurally.

Honey Tripper is currently tattooing part time, and creating a new body of work on paper. You can find her upcoming exhibitions and residencies below.

TOORA ARTCUBE RESIDENCY

The ArtCubes are portable creative spaces designed and delivered by the South Gippsland Shire Council, bringing accessible art to various locations across South Gippsland. To find out more about the ArtCubes, visit: https://visitsouthgippsland.com.au/blog/artcubes/

After a successful ArtCube residency in Fish Creek last year, Honey Tripper is returning to the ArtCubes for the Toora iteration from September 15th to October 5th 2024. Over the course of three weeks, Honey will use one of the ArtCubes as a gallery and studio space, displaying recent works on paper and actively creating one large drawing which will be part of her next body of work.

The large drawing in progress is titled “Connecting Flight” and will depict a number of native birds flying side by side, with thread tangled between them. The work explores the connection between birdlife and the human experiences that unite us all: love, loss, joy, pain... Honey invites visitors to suggest native bird species to be included in the work, and share stories of personal significance in relation to flora/fauna.
